My Hormones and PrEP

I go by the name of Milky and I am a 42-year-old Mexican transgender. I currently do sex work to be able to pay my bills and maintain a roof over my head. By doing the type of work that I do, I have always feared being exposed to HIV, and because of that I get tested every 3 months.

For the past few months I’ve been thinking a lot about taking PrEP, which is a pill that keeps people getting infected with HIV, but I was scared of that interfering with my hormones treatment. I don’t feel like it’s safe to take both at the same time.

Last week I went to Vida/SIDA-Trans Chicago to get tested and they talked to me about PrEP.  I spoke with the tester and asked my questions about the interference of both. My tester informed me that PrEP would not interact with my hormones treatment. I was very happy to hear this because it made me less anxious about my recent exposures. We scheduled an appointment with a care provider, and I am excited to start my PrEP treatment. I don’t want to keep wondering if I’ve been infected. I want to stay healthy and live longer; which I found out that even if I contract HIV I could still live a long and healthy life.

No quiero seguir preguntándome si he sido infectada.
