The Puerto Rican Cultural Center will celebrate its 40th anniversary with a year long Jornada that will begin with the 3 Kings Day event and culminate with a celebration of the 25th anniversary of the founding of VidaSida.

April 4- Presentation and book signing by by Dr. Luis Nieves Falcon of “Torture and Resistance”, a compilation of letters by Oscar Lรณpez Rivera

April 21- Film showing “Who is Albizu Campos?” by filmmaker Michael Torres.

June 7,8,9- Festival de mรบsica jรญbara, Comerio, Puerto Rico, dedicated to the Puerto Rican Cultural Center

Sept 1- 20th Annual Fiesta Boricua featuring “Lo Mejor de Nuestros Pueblos” featuring Jauyua, Puerto Rico

2012 Year-in-Review

January 6-18th Dรญa de los Reyes with ten traditional parade and toy giveaway where hundreds of families participated and thousand of toys where once again given away. This activity was cosponsored by the Puerto Rican Cultural Center, Division Street Business Development Association (DSBDA), Alderman Maldonado and others.

February 8- The Institute of Puerto Rican Arts & Culture (IPRAC) is officially designated a Museum in the Park, a major victory for our community, transforming IPRAC into the first National Puerto Rican museum in the US.

March 3– The Annual Puerto Rican Cultural Center “100×35+4” celebration inaugurates El Rescate, the LGBTQ transitional housing for Puerto Rican and Latino youth that is a program of VidaSIDA. It is the first homeless shelter for Latino LGBTQ youth in the midwest and the 2nd in the country.

April 20- 40th Anniversary of Que Ondee Sola (QOS), the Northeastern Illinois University Puerto Rican and Latino student publication, with Puerto Rican Master Artist Antonio Martell and Rep Luis V. Gutiรฉrrez. This event is a milestone for youth activism in the US because QOS is the longest, most consistent student publication in the country.

May 3-ย The future mayor of San Juan, Puerto Rico, visits Chicago and is welcomed at IPRAC. On November 6, Carmen Yulin Cruz was elected Mayor of San Juan, the capital city of Puerto Rico, as well as it’s largest, making her the 3rd woman to occupy this position after Felicita Rincon, and Sila Calderรณn. Her victory was a result of building bridges and and alliances.

June 8- Governor Pat Quinn and Mayor Rahm Emmanuel participate in a VIP reception at IPRAC hosted by State Rep Cynthia Soto and Congressman Luis V.Gutiรฉrrez.

June 21- Mayor Rahm Emmanuel announces the designation of Clemente as an International Baccalaureate (IB) school. This designation will help the community as a campus frame using the IB as its framework.

June 16- 34th Annual Puerto Rican People’s Parade celebrates the following historical landmarks:
35 years Latin America Motorcycle Association (LAMA)
40 years Que Ondee Solaย 
15 years La Casita de Don Pedro y Dona Lolita
10 years Grupo Nuestro Tambรณ y Cafรฉ Batey Urbano.

September 19- Fiesta Boricua honors Calle 13 with Walk of Fame medallion. This years Fiesta Boricua celebrated the best of our neighborhood “lo mejor de nuestro barrio” recognizing the 40th anniversary of Dr. Pedro Albizu Campos Puerto Rican High School. Among the dignitaries was Mayor Rahm Emmanuel, Congressman Luis V. Gutiรฉrrez with Alderman Roberto Maldonado and State Rep. Cynthia Soto Walk of Fame Award to Eduardo Cabra and his sister.

Oct 31- 11th Annual Haunted Paseo Boricua. Once again hundreds of families were delighted with the offerings on enchanted Paseo Boricua

Dec 1- Puerto Rico Agenda premieres study on Puerto Ricans in Chicago, available on the web at puertoricanchicago.org. It is the first study organically driven by a Puerto Rican community in the US.

Dec 7- 4th Annual Navi-Jazz held at Clemente High School featuring the John Benitez Group, More than 400 people attend.
