“This children’s picture book shares the history of the flags, celebrates community and introduces young readers to the Afro Puerto Rican music bomba. Planting Flags on Division Street helps us to understand how powerful monuments can be and how they shaped the identity of a historic Chicago community.”
Earlier this year my colleague Alejandro Molina, who designed Planting Flags, left the Windy City of Chicago to visit me in the Big Apple. He joined me alongside Juango and Los Pleneros de la 21 in a parranda at East Harlem’s La Casa Azul Bookstore. From that event blossomed the design and layout for this book and the activities bookletPlanting Flags EVERYWHERE.
