Bandera Film Festival Returns

Following the success of the 2019 Trans Chicago Summer Film Festival, “Bandera Film Fest” was created. A festival created and established by the Venezuelan Carlos Trestini and the Puerto Rican Nathalie Gonzalez-Perez. The idea was to create a permanent space where films encompassing a variety of themes are screened in order to serve as a bridge to our communities that allow us to learn about their needs and concerns, and to provide a better service, especially to the transgender community of Chicago.

During the month of January 2020, the first part of “Bandera Film Fest” was held, presenting a film with a LGBTQ+ theme every Friday at the Trans Chicago Empowerment Center at 2753 W. Division. At the end of the screening of each film, a discussion was held to give those present the opportunity to express their opinions about the films and how they identify with some of the situations posed in them. Unfortunately, in the summer of 2020, the opportunity to present the second part of the Bandera Film Fest was not given due to the global pandemic of the Coronavirus. This besieged the opportunity for the event to reinvent itself. Nevertheless, this allowed us an opportunity to realize that the Bandera Film Fest has to be more than merely a film presentation and a brief conversation with the public.

With that said, this upcoming August 20th, 2021 to August 22nd, 2021, the Trans Empowerment Center of the Puerto Rican Cultural Center presents its second Bandera Film Fest. This year, seven (7) extraordinary films will be presented from around the world that are specific to transgender visibility.

With a selection of seven (7) films spread throughout that weekend, all are free to attending audiences. This year’s selection presents a range of genres and themes from family-friendly transgender visibility to triggering conversations responding to the transgender issues as experienced around the world by those with Hispanic cultural identity. In addition to films, Bandera Film Fest features live filmmakers, producers, actor/actresses Q&As, interactive workshops, forums, and more.
