Discover Puerto Rican Flavors

Barrio Borikén is a half-mile-long stretch of Division Street marked at either end by an enormous Puerto Rican flag sculpture that arches over the road; the eastern flag stands beside Artesian Ave, while the western one at Mozart St. Striking murals are sprinkled throughout the community.

Stroll down Division Street, where the intoxicating aromas of mofongo, arroz con gandules, and pasteles waft from family-owned restaurants. Savory pastries from Chucherias or the succulent roasted pork at Papa’s Cache Sabroso will transport your tastebuds straight to the island.

A Journey Through
Puerto Rican Art and Culture

Since 1995, both civic and elected Puerto Rican officials have worked to build on the area's historical significance for Puerto Ricans by attracting more Puerto Rican businesses, organizations, and residents to the area. The community has claimed this space, redefining its within the cultural and political history of Chicago and Puerto Rico. These connections have been made, among other ways, through mural-making, one of the longest-standing traditions within Chicago’s Puerto Rican community. Since the late 1960s, murals have illustrated community struggles and demands for justice as well as celebrated community life and Puerto Rican identity. As the spread of gentrification casts doubts on the future of Puerto Ricans in Humboldt Park, a stubborn hope continues to radiate from Barrio Borikén, a space nationally and internationally known for its culture, art, and affirmation. <
