1976 After years of student activism, the Rafael Cintrón-Ortíz Latino Cultural Center is opened at the University of Illinois at Chicago to provide educational development, as well as cultural and social programming to retain Latino students. It is named after Rafael Cintrón-Ortíz, a Puerto Rican professor assassinated a few months before the Center becomes a reality.
