On Tuesday, May 20, over fifty PRCC staff members met at La Bruquena for a very special lunch with Cuban journalist, social activist and researcher Gisela Arandia Covarrubias. Ms. Arandia, who was here to speak at the LASA 32nd Congress, spoke about one of the many myths that prevail in our society: Hispanics are not racist. Sadly, Afro descendants still face discrimination even within the Hispanic community. There is a lack of representation in the media and the little there is perpetuates negative stereotypes that portray them as inferior or insignificant. This makes us feel ashamed of our identity and ancestry. She encouraged all communities to strengthen their identity by creating alternative audiovisual discourses and community activism that present Hispanics accurately, in all their diversity and glory. We have the power to achieve this change!
