Social epidemiologist Dr. Steven Whitman was known by his loved ones as a “true advocate for social justice.” Dr. Whitman played a key role in studying the disparities between blacks and whites for diseases such as breast cancer, diabetes, stroke and childhood asthma. He also founded Chicago’s Sinai Urban Health Institute, a place that focused on these differences, and fought to improve the quality of care for those living in underserved communities.
