Chief Operating Officer, Puerto Rican Cultural Center

Juan M. Calderón has served as Chief Operating Officer of the Puerto Rican Cultural Center since 2012, following his tenure as Director of Public Health Initiatives. A passionate advocate for racial and LGBTQ equity, he has led transformative efforts to reduce disparities in education, housing, and healthcare.

At 21, Juan became the director of Vida/SIDA, an HIV prevention and care program serving one of the city’s most impacted Latino communities. He pioneered culturally responsive models for HIV care and expanded programming to address homelessness, senior services, and LGBTQ health.

Presently, Juan oversees a portfolio of programs focused on public health, education, economic development, and housing, many operating as independent initiatives. He is a key advisor to city and state lawmakers, championing policies such as culturally designated districts, which have resulted in the creation of a Puerto Rico Town in Chicago.

His work has earned national recognition, including “Top 10 Under 30” by La Voz del Paseo Boricua and “30 Under 30” by Windy City Times. A former Chicago Board of Health member, Juan currently serves as the Treasurer of the National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture Board of Directors. Juan holds a BA from Northeastern Illinois University and is pursuing an MPH at UIC.
